Meals on Wheels
Millions of seniors worldwide have the ability and desire to remain independent, yet they face issues such as decreased mobility and decreased family support.
Advances in modern medicine mean that our life expectancy has reached a record high of 78.7 (Area Agency on Aging). The Meals on Wheels program enables seniors to remain in their homes longer, where they can remain healthy and independent.
Since 2001, Plowshares has operated the Meals On Wheels program for homebound seniors age 60 and over in the Ukiah Valley. In May 2023, we expanded to Calpella and Redwood Valley, and in July 2024, we expanded to Hopland.
Each week day, our volunteer cooks carefully prepare nutritious meals for our 140 Meals on Wheels participants. The cooks strive for organic, fresh foods when possible and prepare a variety of options to meet the dietary needs of the Meals on Wheels participants. Volunteer “drivers” and “runners” carefully pack the entrée, salad, vegetables, bread, and desserts and deliver these meals to the homes of Meals on Wheels participants. The daily delivery provides an opportunity for social connection and a well-check to the participants. The caring Volunteers who donate their time are vigilant for any signs that the seniors on their route may need medical attention or may be in distress. Emergency contacts are kept on file, and staff respond quickly to connect participants to medical or other help if necessary.
There is no charge for the Meals on Wheels program; however, any donations are always greatly appreciated!
Plowshares does not receive federal funding for this program, which allows us the flexibility to serve our community without the restrictions of federal government mandates. We rely on community support to make this program possible.
The Meals on Wheels program is funded by generous support from the community, Fowler Subaru www.fowlersubaru.com, and Mendocino County Health & Human Services Agency.
